This film screening & discussion will be based on Shalini Kantayya’s film ‘ Coded Bias’. 

This event is for International Day for Women and Girls in Science. The hope is that this screening and discussion will encourage reflection and passionate collaboration between participants on the topic of bias in STEM.

Coded Bias explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini´s startling discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces and women accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all.

This event will be held virtually via Zoom. Upon registration you will be given the Zoom details.

This film is rated M for Mature Audience (17+).

A Q&A with the film’s Director, Shalini Kantayya, and NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering – Ontario Region, Dr. Shohini Ghose, will take place following the screening.

WISEatlantic, along with Women in Aerospace Canada – Atlantic, will be co-hosting this event. The conference highlights activities by member organizations, industry partners and government initiatives that are working towards a more diverse and inclusive SETT workforce in Canada.
